Proto-West Germanic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Uncertain. Possibly related to Old Irish benn, bend (“point, peak, prong”), which postulates an Indo-European root *bendʰ- (“to project, protrude, jut; peak”), and thus a pre-Germanic *bendʰno-. Alternatively, perhaps connected with Latin pēnis (“tail, penis”). Compare also Proto-Germanic *faslaz (“offspring”), whence Old English fæsl, Old High German fasal, Old Norse fösull.
