Cognate with Lithuanian starìnti (“to pull with difficulty”) (1sg. starinù), Latvian starîgs (“zealous”), Old Prussian stūrnawiskan f (“seriousness, importance”, ins. sg.), Old English stierne (“serious, strict”), Latin sternāx (“absurd”), strēnuus (“active”), Ancient Greek στρηνής (strēnḗs, “hard, sharp”), στρῆνος (strênos, “force”).
