[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *gʷes- (“twig; leafwork”).
Alternatively perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *gwosdos (“piece of wood”). Compare Proto-Celtic *bozdos (“tail, penis”), Middle Irish bot (“tail, penis”), Welsh both (“hub, nave”), Proto-Slavic *gvozdь (“nail, tack, peg”).[1]
