[edit]Uncertain; possibly reconstructible as *ɸletrom, liquid metathesized from earlier *ɸeltrom, from Proto-Indo-European *pél-tro-m, from *pel- (“to envelope, wrap around”) + *-trom, compare Latin pellis (“pelt, hide”), Proto-Germanic *fellą (“skin, hide”).[1]
