[edit]Probably from Proto-Indo-European *ḱlopni-, from *ḱlep- (“wet, swampy”), see also Czech slota and Slovak slota (“rainy weather”), Lithuanian šlapias (“wet”), Ancient Greek κλέπας (klépas).
