[edit]From Frankish *Hlūdawīg, derived from Proto-Germanic *hlūdaz (“loud; famous”) + *wīgą (“battle”). This is the form of Louis that was present in England before the Norman Conquest in 1066, where it was replaced with Middle English Lewis and Lowis.
