Notes Large percussion hunting rifle or "Elephant Gun" taken during the Boer War by Lieutenant colonel John H Banks, Officer Commanding the 6th Contingent New Zealand Mounted Rifles Banks had previous service with the British Army in India and came from India to New Zealand in February 1892 and was appointed to the command of the Auckland District on the 1st April 1897 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the New Zealand Militia. Left NZ in January 1901 commanding the 6th Contingent New Zealand Mounted Rifles and was later OC Cavalry and Artillery, Cape Town Received the QSA and KSA with clasps- Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, SA01, SA02
