English: Satire on Robert Walpole showing him as a colossal figure at the entrance to St James's Palace bending forward with his naked backside exposed for an ambitious young man to kiss; another man holds a petition and bowls a hoop lettered, "Wealth", "Pride", "Vanity", "Folly", "Luxury", "Want", "Dependance", "Servility", "Venality", "Corruption" and "Prostitution", through Walpole's legs towards an arcade whose arches are labelled, "Saint [James's P]alace", "The Treasury", "The Exchequer" and "The Admiralty". Etching, 1740.


Text: And Henry the KINGmade unto himself a great IDOL, the likeness of which was not in Heaven above, nor in the Earth beneath; and he reared up his Head unto ye Clouds, & extended his Arm over all ye Land; His Legs also were as ye Posts of a Gate, or as an Arch stretched forth over ye Doors of all ye Publick Offices in ye Land, & whosoever went out, or whosoever came in, passed beneath, & with Idolatrous Reverence lift up their Eyes, & kissed ye Cheeks of ye Postern.

Notes

It was advertised in the Country Journal or the Craftsman on 10 May 1740 "being the Picture of a Great Man in a proper Attitutde, as he is described in the next Chronicle of the Kings of England"; and later at 1s in the Daily Post, 29 July 1740 by John King at the Globe in the Poultry.

The print has been attributed by Döring to Bickham, but is unlikely as it was later published by King..
