Summary

Description

English:

The Spanish dancer is a large nudibranch mollusc, commonly around 20 to 30 cm long. It spends the day sheltered from light and comes out at night to feed. When resting, the edges of its mantle are rolled up on themselves, creating a peripheral swelling. If the animal is disturbed, it unrolls its edges and can swim by contractions and undulations of the body in order to move away from the disturbing element. It is this original means of defense that gives it its vernacular name of Spanish dancer. Photographs taken in the Red Sea.
