Etymology

[edit]

First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 시기〮다〮 (Yale: sìkí-tá).

The verb was originally the derived causative form of Old Korean 爲只 (*SIk-, to act) with the causative suffix (i), but has since become a single morpheme. Thus related to 싶다 (sipda, to want).
