Extremely uncertain; many different etymologies have been proposed (for which see Lehmann 1986, who calls the etymology "massively disputed"), but most agree on at least some link to either 𐌷𐌴𐍂 (hēr) or the stem of *𐌷𐌹𐍃 (*his). This etymology is incomplete.
