Etymology

First attested as Old Korean 天叱月乙 (*hanol-s-tol) in the Hyang'yakgugeupbang (鄕藥救急方 / 향약구급방), 1236. Also attested as Old Korean 天原乙 (*hanol-thol) in the same source.

In the Hangeul script, first attested as Middle Korean 하ᄂᆞᆳᄃᆞ래 (hanolstolay) in the Gugeup ganibang eonhae (救急簡易方諺解 / 구급간이방언해), 1:22b[1], 1489, equivalent to modern 하늘 (haneul, sky) +‎ (-s-, compound joining element) +‎ 다래 (darae, hardy kiwi).
