[edit]From アイヌ (“human”) + モシㇼ (“land”). First attested in a 1591 Latin manuscript titled "De yezorum insula" as "Aino moxori" or "Aino mosir" as the name of Hokkaido, meaning "land of the Aino [Ainu]".
