Symbol
[edit]ʟ
- (IPA) a velar lateral approximant.
- (superscript ⟨ᶫ⟩, IPA) [ʟ]-release of a plosive (e.g. [ɡᶫ], sometimes implying an affricate [ɡ͡ʟ̝]); [ʟ]-coloring; or a weak, fleeting or epenthetic [ʟ].
- (UPA) a voiceless l sound (IPA [l̥]).
- (Boas transcription) a lateral affricate (IPA [t͡ɬ])
Usage notes
[edit]The implication that the superscript indicates an affricate when it appears after another consonant is especially strong when it is written ⟨ᶫ̥⟩ (with a voiceless base letter), as the proper lateral-fricative letters ⟨𝼄⟩ and ⟨𐞜⟩ were only made official in 2015; or when written ⟨ᶫ̝⟩ with a voiced base letter.
