[edit]Borrowed from Classical Persian داد (dād), from Middle Persian [script needed] (dʾt' /dād/, “law, justice”), from earlier [script needed] (dāt), from Old Persian 𐎭𐎠𐎫𐎶 (d-a-t-m /dātam/, “law”), from Proto-Iranian *dāta- (compare Manichaean Middle Persian [script needed] (dʾd /dād/), and the Iranian borrowings Classical Syriac ܕܬܐ (dāṯāʾ), Old Armenian դատ (dat), Hebrew דָּת (dāṯ)), from Proto-Indo-European *deh₃- (“to give”).
