Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit *𑀘𑀺𑀯𑀺𑀟 (*civiḍa), from Sanskrit चिपिट (cipiṭa, “flat, flatnosed”). Cognate with Assamese চিৰা (sira), Sylheti ꠌꠤꠠꠣ (siṛa), Nepali चिउरा (ciurā), Hindi चिवड़ा (civṛā).
