[edit]Inherited from Middle Bengali আলিপনা (alipona), from Prakrit 𑀆𑀮𑀺𑀁𑀧𑀡 (āliṃpaṇa) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit आलिम्पन (ālimpana, “whitening, painting”), from आ- (ā-) + लिम्पन (limpana, “smearing, adhering, plastering”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *limpanam, from Proto-Indo-European *limp-o-nom, from *leyp- (“to stick, adhere, smear; fat or sticky substance”). Cognate with Odia ଆଳିପଣା (āḷipaṇā).
