[edit]Etymology 1
[edit]From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (ʾlwh /āluh/, “eagle”) (Manichaean Middle Persian [Manichaean needed] (ʾʾlwf /āluf/)). Compare Gilaki الوغ (aluğ), Mazanderani اله (alle), Northern Kurdish eylo / êlo, Central Kurdish ھەڵۆ (hello) and Bakhtiari آلو (âlō), as well as արծուի (arcui).
From Proto-Iranian *Hr̥jifyáh, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hr̥ȷ́ipyás, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂rǵ-i-pt-ió-s, from *h₂erǵ- (“white, glittering”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬰𐬌𐬟𐬌𐬌𐬀 (ərəzifiia).
