[edit]Perhaps from 𐽰𐽳𐽶𐾁𐽰𐽻𐾅𐽹𐽰𐽷 + -𐽶𐽻𐾅 (*üle- + *-iĺ), ultimately from Proto-Turkic *üle-; or alternatively from a Mongolic source (cf. Middle Mongol ᠤᠯᠤᠰ᠋ (ulus), itself from the same Proto-Turkic root.) Cognate with Old Turkic 𐰆𐰞𐱁 (uluš /ul¹š/) and Karakhanid اُلُشْ (uluš, “village, city”).
