Inherited from Old East Slavic ѩзꙑчьникъ (języčĭnikŭ), from ѩзꙑкъ (językŭ, tongue; nation). Modeled on Ancient Greek ἔθνος (éthnos, nation) : ἐθνικός (ethnikós, heathen).
