From Proto-Mansi *pä̆ľ, from Proto-Finno-Ugric *peljä.[1] Cognates include Northern Khanty пӑԓ (păł), Hungarian fül, Eastern Mansi пяля (pâlâ), Northern Mansi паль (palʹ).
