Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic мощь (moštĭ), from Proto-Slavic *moťь. Compare native мочь (močʹ) and Ukrainian міч (mič) (both inherited from Old East Slavic мочь (močĭ)) and Ukrainian міць (micʹ) and Belarusian моц (moc) (both borrowed from Polish moc).
