Russian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From вышива́нка (vyšivánka, “vyshyvanka, traditional Ukrainian clothing”) + ва́та (váta, “vatniks, ultranationalist fanatics”).
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]вышива́та • (vyšiváta) f inan (genitive вышива́ты, nominative plural вышива́ты, genitive plural вышива́т, relational adjective вышива́тный)
- (animate, neologism, derogatory, collective) Ukrainian ultranationalists, adherents excessively proud of Ukrainian culture or history, especially in a jingoistic way.
Usage notes
[edit]- "Вышивата" is often used pejoratively in Russian political discourse, especially in contexts critical of Ukrainian nationalism or patriotism. The term is typically employed by opponents of the Ukrainian national movement to mock or belittle those who are perceived as overly focused on Ukrainian cultural identity. It also suggests that Ukrainian ultranationalists behave very much like their Russian counterparts, hence the "ва́та" part (related to "ва́тник", a term for a Russian ultranationalist fanatic).
