Diacritical mark

[edit]

◌̨

  1. ogonek, a common diacritic for nasalization
  2. (IPA, dated) Sometimes used to mark nasalization in order not to clutter tone marks placed above the vowel letter.
  3. (IPA, obsolete) graphic substitution for ◌᪷.
  4. (UPA, on a consonant letter) laminal articulation, e.g. ⟨s̨⟩ (IPA ◌̻).
  5. (UPA, on a vowel letter) a reduced vowel; equivalent to a turned letter.

Usage notes

[edit]

Along with the cedilla ⟨◌̧⟩ and the overstruck tilde ⟨◌̴⟩, the ogonek is one of the few diacritics that graphically connects with a letter and yet is used productively in Unicode, rather than there being a separate Unicode character assigned to each combination of letter and diacritic.
